In the Dave White’s video Visitors and Residents he presents his principle of two contrasting ways people engage with the web. White suggests that the visitor use the web to access, “a collection of tools.” Visitors don’t leave a trace often because they are concerned with privacy issues. They don’t have an online social persona. Most often they use the web with a goal in mind and their research is often in an area of expertise. On the other hand White uses the term “resident” to describe the people who use the web as a social space. Residents form an online identity and often update their online persona through social media updates. The required amount of updates to stay current in social media must remain constant thus devoiding updates of originality and quality. They share private and personal information because they enjoy the sense of community. They want to stay visible within their networks and get feedback on the personal information they share. After watching White’s video I would call myself a “visitor.” Like White mentions, I don’t see the point of, “flaunting my personal life on social media networking sites." White is clear to point out that visitors do not lack technological skills. Instead the focus is on how to engage in online spaces effectively for collaboration and professional development. Within an educational context as a visitor I make use of Twitter, blogs, videos, Pinterest, Diigo, and Google communities to find and share educational resources. I am aware that the web can be used in a different context that is not in a skills or age basis. I stay up to date with the different cultures that pertain to different web resources and I keep motivated to find new and relevant resources. White’s presentation of the clear distinction between residents and visitors is influential to educators seeking different contexts and platforms to collaborate with other professionals. Hi Cristina! Like you, I consider myself to be a "visitor" prior to the start of this credential program. I don't participate in social media and I don't like to "flaunt my personal life" as well. However, I do appreciate how Dave White's theory gives me a bit more perspective of how and why we are creating and fostering PLNs as "institutional residents."
